Mitsuboshi Diamond Industrial Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Settsu, Osaka; President and CEO: Masaki Wakabayashi; hereinafter “MDI”) is proud to announce that its proposal, “Establishment of Manufacturing and Shipping Systems for Processing Equipment for Mass Production of Perovskite Solar Cells,” has been selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “GX Supply Chain Construction Support Project” (FY2025 Subsidy for Promoting a Transition to a Decarbonized Growth-Oriented Economic Structure).

With this selection, MDI will accelerate its investment in establishing mass-production processes for Perovskite Solar Cells (PSC) and spearhead the development of the domestic supply chain.

1. The Strategic Imperative: Unlocking Japan’s Energy Future

Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs) are the definitive solution for achieving global carbon neutrality by 2050. Their lightweight, flexible nature, combined with Japan’s abundant domestic supply of iodine—a key raw material—makes PSCs a critical asset for national energy security.

However, the transition from laboratory research to gigawatt-scale mass production has long been hindered by a significant technical bottleneck: the inability of conventional technologies to maintain both high speed and precision on large-area films.

2. MDI’s Mastery: Bridging the Gap with Proprietary R2R Technology

Since 2007, MDI has leveraged its deep expertise in processing hard and brittle materials to pioneer thin-film solar cell manufacturing. Today, we have perfected a proprietary Roll-to-Roll (R2R) Laser Processing Technology specifically engineered for the unique demands of PSCs.

The production infrastructure established through this project will deliver performance that redefines industry standards:

• Unprecedented Production Velocity (Takt Time): Overcoming the limitations of legacy systems to enable commercial-scale high-speed processing.

4. Strategic Outlook and Market Leadership

Through this project, MDI aims to establish a system to manufacture, ship, and supply laser processing equipment equivalent to an annual power generation capacity of over 500 MW to domestic panel manufacturers by the end of fiscal year 2029. Furthermore, we will continue to improve the takt time of our processing equipment to contribute to the global commercialization of PSCs.
